Book review (taken in part from a NFHS review by John Foley)
This clearly written book about lowering the chance of injury to
athletics and law suits against coaches is by a former athletic
administrator and coach.
The book is organized into 16 chapters that deal with safety and
litigation, the legal duties of a coach, sixty situations to avoid, a
³defensive game plan² to lower the chance of injury, specific suggestions
for specific sports and checklists.
According to Dr. Foley, ³This book provides important information to
help coaches and administrators develop risk-management programs to
decrease the incidences and severity of injuries and to avoid the perils
of litigation. The chapter on sixty situations to avoid is worth the cost
of the entire book.²

IF I KNEW THEN WHAT I KNOW NOW by Becky Bell
The book student-athletes, coaches, parents and teachers have been waiting for: If I Knew Then What I Know Now - Life Skills Strategies for Success From Today's' Student-Athlete Leaders.
Since the first CHAMPS/Life Skills programs began in 1991, more than 400 colleges and universities have implemented one. The University of Arizona has been used as a model nationwide for programming in academics, athletics, personal development, career development and community service. The importance of life skills and of having a broad based experience at college cannot be overestimated and there is a push for much more programming at the high school level. In collaboration with the NCAA, student-athletes were surveyed at the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference in May 2002, through life skills program coordinators, as well as national student-athlete advisory committees. The need for this book is overwhelming according to many in the field and as one coach commented, "This should be required reading for EVERY student-athlete."

ODD GIRL OUT: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls
Rachel Simmons (Harcourt; Publication date: April 30,2002)
When we think of bullies, there is a tendency to focus on boys. But as
girls of any age, ethnicity, and social class will tell you, girls can be
bullies too. Whether by direct cruelty or subtle ostracism, female
bullying involves a covert and complex network of abusive social
relationships that cn be detrimental to a girl's self-esteem and social
development. Just as the media has overlooked this subversive problem, so
have parents and teachers who are unable to recognize the signs of this
destructive behavior within the intimate circles of female friendship.
This is the first book to examine and bring to the public's attention
these experiences and their consequences for teenage girls.
ODD GIRLS OUT provides a new language for understanding and dealing with
with the complex layers of aggression that run through the lives and
firendshps of girls.
The book has been on the New York Times Best Seller lists for many
weeks.
Anyone wishing flyers for handouts may get them by faxing the NHSACA offices (203) 288-8224.
